Mashhad Car Rescue

Located in the north-east of Iran, Mashhad is the capital city of Khorasan Razavi province and is the second most populous urban area in the country. Famous for housing the shrine of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Imam, it receives about 20 million pilgrims and tourists yearly. The region also houses one of the largest cultural and artistic treasuries in the country, including numerous manuscript books and paintings.

In terms of economy, the city has a strong leather industry, and is also home to several universities and research institutes. A large number of students also flock to the city every year for higher education and training, contributing to the city’s high literacy rate. Unemployment, poverty, and drug abuse are among the biggest social problems in the city.

On 19 February, an accident happened on the rail route between Neyshabur and Mashhad. The locomotive of a train and a car collided at a speed of 165 km/h, causing the train to derail and crash into a nearby mountainside. The accident caused 48 deaths and 103 injuries, the highest number of railway casualties in recent years in the country.

As a result, the city’s transport system has been severely affected. Many roads have been closed and public services have been temporarily halted. A rescue team consisting of 200 members of the Iranian Red Crescent Society has been deployed to aid in search and rescue operations. The Red Crescent has provided food and relief supplies for those who have been left homeless after the disaster.

The cause of the incident is still under investigation. However, the authorities have warned people to stay away from the area due to safety concerns. According to reports, the driver of the car was trying to avoid a pothole when it slipped and crashed into the railway tracks.

Pedestrian road traffic accidents remain a major concern in urban areas, particularly in Iran. The present study aims to identify factors associated with children’s pedestrian accidents in urban neighbourhoods of Mashhad, using an exploratory multivariate logistic regression model. The data were gathered from 5354 accidents resulting in injury or death between 2018 and 2020 from the امداد خودرو مشهد Emergency Medical Services database. The results suggest that environmental and geographical considerations should be incorporated into urban planning to mitigate the risk of children’s road traffic accidents in this country. The authors offer suggestions for future research in this field. They also highlight the importance of developing a comprehensive database for this type of analysis.
