Often called lion-dogs in English, they are statue pairs of lion-like creatures guarding the entrance to many Japanese Shinto shrines. Traditionally, they also serve as guards at Buddhist temples and nobility residences and are regarded as the spirits of ancestors. But recently, they have been seen in public places as well. One of them was even killed by a murderer who seemed to be a member of Shibatora. What is the truth behind this?
Taketora Shibata looks so vulnerable that bullies rip him off on the street, but he’s actually an expert swordsman in kendo. He is also an expert police detective who specializes in undercover work. In addition, he has the ability to see the “reaper’s hands” around people who are in danger, which helps him get to the bottom of crimes. With the help of his friends, he takes on all kinds of jobs as cover including a high school student, maid cafe waitress, and delinquent in a juvenile detention center.
He has a baby face but he is an excellent swordsman. He also follows the ideals of his father and tries to understand the feelings of underage criminals. He is nicknamed “Shibatora” because of his childlike appearance and abilities.
Kojiro Fujiki is the Director of the Juvenile Safety Division and Shibata’s boss. She is ruthless and often uses illegal undercover operations to accomplish her goals, even though she has a heart of gold underneath her brash exterior. She shares a past with Sakura Chiba and is the sister of Mizuki Hosho, who works alongside Shibata.
Hakuto Kagawa is an expert hacker who supports Shibata’s cases behind the scenes. He’s overweight, but he possesses great technical knowledge and proves himself useful in the field. He and Kojiro support Shibatora with their own business, Sabbath Sabbath, a clothing store where they provide room and board for Taketora, Hakuto, and Mizuki.
Rika Machida is a girl who’s in love with Shibatoto but she can’t admit it. Her mother ignores her out of her own insecurities, and she is also a victim of abuse. She portrays herself as a strong and tough woman, but she’s not really that at all. She is in fact the daughter of a gangster and has connections to Helter Skelter, the neighborhood gang who’s been selling meth. She and Shibatoto are in danger, too. Could Ochiai be behind it all? The answer will be revealed in the next episode.
